Mind influences metabolism

Mind influences metabolism may not be acceptable and may be odd for most of you. Even the most elite fitness experts and doctors are unaware of it. Some even limit the comprehension of metabolism to breakdown of digested food for energy. What really is metabolism? And, how it is affected by mind? Here is a brief explanation in simple terms.

Metabolism:

All the chemical reactions that takes place in the body are called metabolism. It includes the metabolism of individual organs like liver, kidney etc. The different body systems like circulatory system, endocrine system, digestive system also have their own metabolism.

In general, there are two types of metabolic reactions called catabolic and anabolic reactions. When the larger molecules are broken down to small and simpler forms for the body to use effectively as energy it is called a catabolic reaction (Ex: Carbohydrates from the food are broken down into smaller glucose molecules for energy). When the smaller molecules are combined in to larger molecules it is an anabolic reaction (Ex: Amino acids bind together to build structural and functional proteins).

Mind influences metabolism:

When we are stressed, happy or relaxed, our adrenal gland secrete various hormones depending on the feeling and emotion. Even interaction with people makes the adrenal gland secrete hormones which influence our metabolic life.

Let’s take chronic stress as an example. A psychological stress that occurs when a pet animal dies, when financial crisis arises or some serious problem in office. None of these have a physical attachment or cause physical damage to our body. These are just emotions triggered by mind.

When we are scared of something or under stressful condition our adrenal glands release a hormone called cortisol. Sometimes without any physical activity and in a complete rested state an individual can feel low on energy and feel stressed. Contrarily in a fasted state, by meeting someone you like; you feel energetic and exited. The happy and excited feel release endorphins, serotonin and various other chemicals / hormones in the brain and body.

Ghrelin the hunger hormone can be secreted just by looking at colorful pictures of your favorite food and make you feel hungry.

These chemical messengers called hormones secreted due to various feelings clearly proves the influence of mind on chemical reactions that happens in our brain and body.
